Pratham Books Champion : Legacy School

Sreedevi. R, Librarian (Legacy School, Bangalore) shared the following story with us :

Session conducted on :18th and 19th of Sept 2014
Number of champions : 67 kids
Number of kids reached : 80-90 kids in Shams school, about 100 kids in Sumangali Seva Ashram
Language the session was conducted in : Kannada, Hindi

The students of Legacy School, Bangalore created magic when they brought 'Takloo- the salt seller' to life with their enactment of the same story. The objective of the skit was to fire the imagination of the children of Sumangali Seva Ashram and Shams School -Banglore and inculcate the importance of reading.

We at Legacy School, showcased a play in Kannada and Hindi on the story of 'Takloo- the salt seller'. Our students thoroughly enjoyed enacting the short play based on Takloo. The play was performed by our students both in Hindi and Kannada. Children of Grade 3 (36 students) enacted the play in Hindi (and the children were very excited about their different costumes.) Students of Grade 4 (25 students) enacted the play in Kannada - delivering their dialogue in pure Kannada. They children put in a lot of effort in delivering the dialogue taking painstaking efforts in learning their lines in such a short span of time even as they tried hard to be as authentic and realistic as possible in their delivery, with the extensive props used it was quite a accomplished performance thanks to the untiring efforts of our teachers especially Ms Nisha, Ms Sunitha, Ms Sahar and Ms Nomitha.

Subsequently we also added another important facet to our presentation namely the importance of recycling, conservation and planting of saplings. This was demonstrated by the children exhibiting and elaborating on a few art pieces that they had created through recycled art.

The children also gifted them brand new notebooks, stationery packs and some of their own story books.

The two 2 schools that we visited were namely, Shams school in Nagawara and Sumangali Sava Ashram, in R.T Nagar. Both schools cater to underprivileged children.

Thank you Legacy School and Sreedevi for spreading the joy of reading!

Pratham Books Champion : Arthi Anand-Navaneeth

This year's flagship event for the champions event was conducted by Arthi Anand-Navaneeth. Arthi Anand is the first champion to complete ten sessions of the TENTASTIC campaign. Arthi's tenth session also happened to be on the occasion of the 'One Day - One Story' campaign. Arthi conducted 4 storytelling sessions to celebrate International Literacy Day. Read about the 1st event here.

A lover of stories, a Tulika author, a weekend story teller (Art's Tales) , a Saffrontree reviewer, this mom of two ensures she gets her fill of stories and shares the joy they bring. She also blogs at http://artstales.blogspot.in and http://abouttimenow.blogspot.in.

Date: 6th September
Number of sessions: 1
Number of children: 40
Languages used: English

The venue for this year's flagship event at Bangalore was Hippocampus, Koramangla. Arthi even decided to match her outfit to the location mentioned in the book by wearing a Maharashtrian saree blouse. Once Arthi kicked off the session, hands flew up as she encouraged kids to imagine where the story was located, what the story was about and what was going to happen. And so began the storytelling session!

Giggles and laughter ensued as Takloo's story progressed and soon Arthi had all the kids draw their own version of Takloo's hats. The kids went to town with all the colours they could get their hands on and drew fancy hats for dear Takloo. Some of the kids didn't stop drawing and went on to give Takloo new clothes too (maybe because they were remembering Paplu from last year? :)). A quick quiz followed and after that we had to eat some yummy food of course. But, since Takloo's story had something to do with salt, the kids also got some lime juice - and got to sprinkle salt on their drinks - Takloo style!

You can view all the images from Arthi's event here
