Pratham Books Champions : Storipur and Priya Muthukumar

Priya Muthukumar sent us this lovely story of using the book 'Paplu, the Giant' during a storytelling session held at StoripurAs a student counselor and educator, she enjoys all her interactions with kids. Writing, telling stories and simply being with Mother Nature are few of the many things  she loves to do! Storipur intends to fill up the gaps, through the ancient art form, storytelling. Sharing stories about environment, countries, societies, cultures and about all ourselves: it's Storipur's humble attempt to build responsible communities.

After the wonderful response for my storytelling session based on a Caribbean story on our monthly theme, ‘magic’, my search began for a story based on a similar theme, however, I was looking for a story which was fun , with a subtle message incorporated in it. Picking up the book, ‘Paplu, The Giant’ in our local library was my ‘aha’ moment! Flipping through the pages of this thin book, I fell in love with Paplu! From that moment, I knew my young audience would adore Paplu. And that’s how the Paplu journey began for us!

Our kids (3-10 year olds), I must say, listened to Paplu’s story without batting their eyelids. The youngest of the lot, with all innocence, asked me, with wonder brimming in his eyes, ‘but, Priya Aunty, giant means what?’ So, to explain, Paplu’s height, I grabbed a stool, and balanced myself on it and said, ‘Paplu was soooo very tall!”, stretching my hand. The kids added to the story, saying Paplu was as tall as the tree, as tall as a building, he could touch the sky …… and so on and so forth! Our giggles and chatter continuing, non-stop!

Each one in our audience pretending to be a villager in the story, enthusiastically draped the dupattas piled at the corner of the room, on me… standing on the stool, pretending to be Paplu! As the dupattas kept falling down, I announced to the group, Paplu will need a proper dress and that we all needed to make it!

As a storyteller, it was definitely a cherishable moment for me, to see all the kids sit around Paplu’s gigantic dress, cutting and sticking, sharing scissors and glue with the only objective of making Paplu, the friendly giant’s dress! We made Paplu’s dress with old newspapers, calendar sheets and other re-useable scrap pieces of paper. This dress- making activity gave us another opportunity to highlight recycling and our responsibility towards our environment.

We were pleased with Paplu’s dress and the story continued. Paplu’s kindness and strength, both appealed to our kiddos. The words,‘ Priya Aunty, will you tell us another Paplu story, next time! ?”, reconfirmed their love for Paplu. Finally, the kids were asked to draw their own versions of Paplu. And what appeared on paper, was a variety of Paplus, big and small, thin and fat! Many thanks to Team Pratham Books, for introducing us to Paplu! Strength is also about kindness, helping one another, and being there for others was our ‘ take- away’ from Paplu’s story.

Pratham Books Champion : VIDYA

Jayshree from VIDYA shares an account of the storytelling sessions conducted at Tirandaz Municipal School.

Making this happen at VIDYA was our Co-ordinator who networked with the School and created this lovely 'Thank you Pednekar Sir'  for a nicely arranging the Shared Reading Program at the Tirandaz School on the 26th afternoon.
I enjoyed reading with the children - the Story Too Many Bananas and of course the poem that we made .

The children were well disciplined and the team of teachers too eager as was the principal who sat down and made diligent notes ! What I liked most was the feedback from her and the teacher who said that they needed to upgrade themselves and anything that is good for the children they were open to learning. It touched me as when teachers have open minds , open to questioning , to thinking , to be alive to different views, children will enjoy the learning.

The story was humourous , we did a pictorial walk through where children kept guessing through the visuals the different situations that could emerge, we then read together and explored the story and a choral reading too followed ! The WOW words had them excited as they read the words/sentences where these figured.

And the poetry with the English Hindi poetry was a hit ! A team activity then followed, each group picked out chits like too many ideas, too many people, too many dustbins, to many stars, too many books etc..and were freely asked to express through colours and write whatever they felt.

I thought they would freely draw clean cities when there are too many dustbins... but they told me it is dirty if too many dustbins are around - they must have thought of overflowing garbage cans in the city !

The charts that emerged well looked to me like a nice aid for teaching grammar on the concept of ' too many " ...:)

Well , stories and art have a mind of their own and take their own flight of fancy

Big cheers to the single minded focus on Read India...

Here's the poem that was created for the session:

One banana, two bananas

Three bananas, four bananas

Five bananas, six bananas

Seven bananas, eight bananas

Na na Na na , mere paas hai

Too Many Bananas !

Not my family, not my friends

Not my neighbours and not my cow

Sab log bolte Na na Na na

Hamein nahin chahiye... Too many Bananas !

Soch mein padha Sringeri Sirnivas

Kya karoon kya karoon

Mere pass hai Too many bananas!

Bolo bolo what will you do

If you have too many bananas?

Phir ek bacha jhat se bola

I will make some Banana Paysam

And I will make some Kela Sheera

I will make some Banana Fritters

And I will make some Banana Shake !

Sringeri Srinivas has padha

For he knew what to do

When he had Too Many Bananas !

Jayshree also added :

It has been a most vibrant month at all VIDYA centres as we celebrated the Reading Festival to mark the World Literacy Day ! A day we felt, was just not enough. All teachers and volunteers donned their Reading Hats in our four community centres read out to 350 children in English, Hindi and Marathi.
We also explored O Henry's The Last Leaf with the Youth Program - the NIOS !

The Reading Virus spread to local school networks in Powai and Jogeshwari too !

Pratham Books Champion : Advesa Trust

Advesa Trust sent us the following report about the storytelling session they conducted.

Story Reading at Alphonsa children's library
Conducted by Advesa Charitable Trust

On September 8th, around 30 child members of Advesa's Alphonsa children's library gathered in the library hall by 10 in the morning eagerly to hear the story from Sushamma teacher.Though there were many story reading sessions dont by Advesa, this was special as they were doing it to help Pratham Books to promote the reading habit in children.

As usual Librarian Sushamma teacher has organised the group and enthu chidren helped in putting up the posters. Advesa's Managing Trustee Dr Shanthi and volunteer Mr Vijayan were present. After a brief talk about the importance of reading, Mrs.Sushamma read aloud the story "Lion and the two children" given by Pratham Books. Sushamma teacher kept the children all ears during the story telling and we had a small chat about the story in the end.

Few kids expressed their wish to read stories, so the stage was handed over to them for next 30 minutes.

They read from the library collection, mostly the one page/ short stories with pictures. Then all took a pledge to maintain the reading habit and to tell others about its importance.

We from the trust thanked Mrs.Sushamma and the kids for making it happen, as nothing is possible without them, especially on a Sunday.

We wish to thank Pratham books for inviting us to do this and our Volunteer, Blogger Ms.Anitha for linking us both.

We wish all happy reading for happy living!
