Pratham Books Champion : Bijal Thakkar Singh

For International Literacy Day (8th September), we had a dream - we wished that 100 people would volunteer to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We ended up finding more than 250 champions to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We will be sharing the stories of all our champions through our blog.

This story was sent to us by Bijal Thakkar Singh. She wrote :

It was my pleasure volunteering on reading day. Once I received the books and banner from you, I started spreading word in my building and put up banner in the society. However, on the story telling day very few of them turned up. Hence, I went house to house calling them again. Finally i managed to get 15 children. We introduced ourselves and started the story telling session. Listening to children's creative ideas is fun. The book chosen 'Susheela's kolams' was just perfect to give them imaginative wings. When I asked them where will Susheela make her next kolam.... they gave me funny answers like on fridge, sea shore etc .....they enjoyed imagining. I have a small terrace. Children were given a chalk to draw what they would like to draw. I finally said good-bye to them by giving away a fairy star made out of news paper and old magazine. While taking this they had to promise me that they will read more story books at home.

Thank you Bijal for spreading the joy of reading!
