Pratham Books Champion : Meera Mouli

For International Literacy Day (8th September), we had a dream - we wished that 100 people would volunteer to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We ended up finding more than 250 champions to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We will be sharing the stories of all our champions through our blog.

This story was sent by Meera Mouli.

Storytelling session conducted in Bangalore on 8th September, 2012

Had some 40-45 children attending in a mid-day meal hall near my househelp's house. There were kids from Nursery to 10th standard. I read out Susheela's Kolam and Chulbul's tail in English and translated and discussed in Tamil. The children loved it. I gave them each a sheet of simple kolams they could learn and use. Many girls already knew how to make kolams :)

Chulbul's tail was a bigger hit and the children were excited to see the pictures and hear the story.

I also distributed books which I had purchased for them. I ran out of books as I had planned only for 20 children and had to give away colouring sheets from the book. Children loved it and were asking if I would be coming tomorrow as well.

Thanks for the opportunity. It was very enriching for me.

Thank you Meera for spreading the joy of reading!
