Pratham Books Champion : Kamakshi Moorthy

This International Literacy Day, Pratham Books has taken a 1000 steps towards a 'Reading India'

What started as a small step by Pratham Books to spread the joy of reading has become a movement. Last year Pratham Books initiated the One Day-One Story initiative on the occasion of International Literacy Day and we conducted over 250 storytelling sessions. This year we are delighted that over a 1000 sessions are happening across the length and breadth of the country. We will be sharing the stories of all our champions through our blog.

This story was sent to us by Kamakshi Moorthy, Social Ambassodor, IDF, (Neela Saraswathi Bal Gurukul), and Principal, Vruksha Vidyaashram CBSE School, Chennai.

It was a wonderful experience that I had along with my other colleagues in my place / school where we conducted the reading sessions. I had 4 teachers reading, each voicing for a character and a little child enacting the character Soni the little baby girl, Paplu's friend. The people involved were, the Principal- Mrs.Siva Kamakshi, HM- Mrs. Siva Kavitha, KG Co-ordinator Mrs.Sashikala and teachers 1. Premadevi, 2. MsShirley, 3. Ms.Divya, 4. Ms. Adithi and Baby Shalini of Std I who played the Soni role.

I had around 450 children, listening with full attention and responding here and there when a question was put forth. After the full reading, we had a small recap of the whole story in the question answer format and the children responded beautifully.

I had an activity, wherein I had requested a teacher of mine to draw the picture outline of Paplu in a chart, in his pyjamas and also had the children bring in tiny pieces of cloth and made them stick them on the chart to make the multi coloured dress for him.

From the Neela Saraswathi Balgurukul end - the parents who helped me were Ms.Gowri and Ms.Deepa.

It was just FABULOUS.

Then I had out of my own interest , created different activity sheets based on the story for classes I to VIII.

Overall it was a great experience and JOY........ all over.

Thank you Siva Kamakshi, Siva Kavitha, Mrs.Sashikala,  Premadevi, Shirley, Divya,  Adithi and baby Shalini for spreading the joy of reading!
