Pratham Books Champion : Swagata Sen Pillai

For International Literacy Day (8th September), we had a dream - we wished that 100 people would volunteer to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We ended up finding more than 250 champions to conduct storytelling sessions across the country. We will be sharing the stories of all our champions through our blog.

Rajesh Khar (editor, Pratham Books) attended the session conducted by Swagata Sen Pillai on 8th September 2012. He wrote ...

Swagata held a storytelling session in her residence in sector-25, Noida and about 35 children participated. She began with a background about Kolamand then went on to read the story, Susheela's Kolams in Hindi. The look on the faces of the little children was amazing when they learnt that Susheela had drawn kolams everywhere! They narrated their little anecdotes of sketching on the walls, in elder siblings' notebooks, on blackboards in their schools and they were quite expressive. Swagata used a laptop to show them interesting kolam designs and the session ended with children learning to draw kolams on paper with pencils and pens. A couple of young mothers also participated in drawing of the kolams. All the children went home with their drawings and tips on how to make better kolams.

Thank you Swagata for spreading the joy of reading!
